THE AHA OR "FRUIT ACIDS" STORY
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are a group of acids naturally occurring in
fruits, milk, and sugar cane (Glycolic—sugar cane; lactic—sour milk,
tomato juice; malic—apples; tartaric acid—grapes, wine; citric—citrus
fruits).
AHAs were initially used for skin peeling to remove skin-surface
defects, and scar tissue, and to reveal a more perfect complexion.
Subsequently, attention focused on their marked "de-aging" benefits.
Years of sun exposure and the natural aging process slow down the
skin's ability to properly renew itself. The result is rough-textured,
and hyper-pigmented (blotchy and/or excessively freckled) skin.
When an AHA is applied, it penetrates these upper layers of dead skin
and breaks apart the bonds that hold them together. The skin sloughs
off these dead cells to make way for newer, healthier cells trapped
underneath. The skin's own exfoliating and regeneration processes are
enhanced by AHAs stimulating increased skin cell renewal.
The most commonly used AHA is glycolic acid, which gives similar
results compared with other AHAs. A combination of fruit acids
(including glycolic) appears to result in less irritation. Joyce Blok
AHA Treatment Complex uses a blend of three fruit acids (glycolic,
citric and lactic) at an optimum pH of 3.5. The benefits of AHAs
are numerous
 | They help reduce unsightly skin blotches and "age spots", caused
by extensive sun exposure. |
 | They help improve acne-prone skin by unblocking pores and
speeding skin healing. |
 | They improve skin hydration. |
 | Skin becomes clearer and more even, and fine lines disappear or
become less noticeable. |
